How it works
Pick the background color for transparent areas. It stays white unless you change it.
Set the quality. 85 works for photos, while screenshots with text look better at a higher value.
Then add your PNG images. Several at once is fine.
Download the finished JPGs.

When PNG to JPG makes sense
Windows, macOS, iPhones and many Android phones save screenshots as PNG. That’s ideal for text and app interfaces. When the screenshot shows a photo, a video still or a map, the file quickly grows to several megabytes. Scanning software and graphics apps sometimes export photos as PNG too.
JPG solves that. A photo saved as JPG is usually a fraction of the size of the same photo as PNG. Some typical cases:
- A job portal only accepts JPG files up to a certain size.
- You want to email a batch of screenshots and the attachment is too large.
- A scanned invoice was saved as PNG and has to go into your health insurer’s upload portal.
Transparency and the background color
JPG files have no transparent areas. Before converting, you decide what color those areas should get. White is the default. For a logo that will later sit on a dark background, choose that background’s color.
Semi-transparent pixels are blended with the color you chose. Soft edges and shadows will therefore only look right on exactly that background. Put the JPG on a different color and a light or dark fringe appears around the subject.
Text and sharp edges
JPG was designed for photos. Around hard contrasts like lettering, lines or flat areas of color, the compression adds small blocky artifacts and smudges. A quality of 90 or more helps with text-heavy screenshots. If the text still looks rough, keep that image as PNG.
Simple graphics with few colors often get no smaller as JPG. Charts and icons are better left as PNG.
Formats and limits
Good to know
- PNG goes in, JPG comes out. JPG, WebP and HEIC files are accepted as well.
- Transparent and semi-transparent pixels are blended with the background color. The default is white (#ffffff).
- The quality slider starts at 85. Lower values save space, higher ones protect text and edges.
- Animated PNGs (APNG) are rejected because a JPG can only store a single frame.
- The JPG keeps the PNG's file name with a new extension. Text chunks and EXIF data are dropped, and colors are converted to sRGB.
- Each image can have up to 50 megapixels, or up to 16 megapixels on iPhone and iPad. Larger images are rejected with a notice.
- All converted images together can be up to 512 MB, or up to 192 MB on iPhone and iPad. The same limit applies to the ZIP file.
What color does the transparent background become?
White, unless you change it. Use the “Background for transparent areas” color picker before adding files. The color applies to every image you add afterwards.
Why does my logo have a fringe after converting?
The logo's soft edges were blended with the background color. On a different background, that blended edge shows. Convert the logo with the color it will sit on, or use PNG or WebP if it has to stay transparent.
How much smaller will the file get?
For photos and screenshots of photos, usually a lot. Graphics with large flat areas may shrink only a little or even grow. The results list shows the new size next to each image.
Can I turn the JPG back into a PNG?
Yes, on the “Convert images” page with PNG as the target. You'll find it under “Other conversions”. The transparency and the detail lost to compression won't come back, though. Keep the original PNG if you might need it again.
